Jewellery Repairs, Broken Gold/Silver Jewellery & Scrap

Nothing is worse than your favourite piece of jewellery breaking. I should know, I recently dropped my specially made pet project Amber Pennanular, resulting in one of the amber gemstones shattering.

Many of us would consign these pieces to the bottom of the sock drawer, or an empty shoebox in the cupboard. However, this need not be the end of the story for your special trinket, as they can often be repaired at much lower cost than replacement!

Some Jewellery Can Be Repaired

An ex-colleague of mine brought this Viking-style bracelet to me as they absolutely loved it, but weren't happy about wearing it as the T-bar catch did not fit the loop end properly, and would keep coming open and falling off.

I reduced the size of the loop so that it was a tighter fit on the bar, and as you can see below, the work is totally invisible, and even leaves the hallmark (bottom right on the loop) clearly visible and very much present, so the original hallmark is undisturbed.

As I'm sure you can guess, my ex-colleague was delighted!

...But Not Everything

Unfortunately, not everything can be repaired with the success of the bracelet mentioned above, but this does not need to be the end of the story for the piece. As an artist jeweller, I am always on the lookout for broken jewellery in gold or silver, that I can recycle and use in my works. Perhaps your broken piece could be recycled into a miniature work of art?
